New Measures The ISTG 2021 will see the ban lifted on online slot games and online poker – a much-anticipated and welcome amendment to the current gambling laws. The Gambling Acts of the individual German states authorise regulators to sanction unauthorised gambling and related advertising as an administrative offence with administrative fines, whereby the amount of fines which can be imposed ranges up to approximately EUR 500,000 as per the various Gambling Acts of the German states. In addition, the AML Act provides for very high fines of up to EUR 5 million or even up to 10% of the operator’s total turnover (see sec. 56 AML Act) depending on the Germany’s relationship with online gambling has been in a grey area for quite a long time. It was largely illegal, except for about 20-something operators who had permission. There were not many legal gambling sites in Germany, and the process of obtaining a license was extremely hard and complicated.
